Beyond the obvious safety measures of never touch a hot pot, there are a few things to keep in mind such as:

  • Steam is Dangerous – Steam burns are actually more
    severe than a direct contact burn. Because of this, you should always have a barrier such as sleeves, a towel or a pot lid, between you and the vapors as you drain pasta, potatoes, or other ingredients from boiling water.
  • Oven Racks get Hot – The awkward angle of leaning over an open oven door as you attempt to lift a hot, heavy object from the bottom oven rack has caused many a cook to be burned. Always use some type of pot holder, or preferably oven glovcooking-safety-2es with fingers.
  • BBQ’s – BBQ’s are another place that you should definitely wear oven gloves with

    fingers. This type of oven glove protects your hands from residual heat, while also
    allowing you to have full movement.

  • Curled Fingers for Cutting – When cutting with sharp knives ALWAYS cucooking-safety-4rl your fingertips in and away from the blades edge. This will prevent dangerous cuts and cross blood contamination with food.

Recipes for Beginners

Stick with easy to follow basic recipes when you first start out. This will increase your chances of success, as well as inspire you to try new more complicated meals with each success. Let’s start by preparing a roast. Roast is one of those meals that can be done using a variety of meats, as well as methods, but in general is very simple, yet comes across as elaborate.

Begin by selecting a quality cut of meat, in this case we are going to be adventurous and make a German Style Pork Roast with Sauerkraut.


1 Large Heavy Bottomed Pot with Lid

1 Grater

1 Long Handled Spoon

1 Sharp Knife


Pork Roast

1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil

2 Cloves Garlic Minced

1 Package of Sauerkraut in Juice

1 Russet Potato

1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder

1 Tablespoon Onion Powder

Black Pepper to Taste


In a large pot brown pork roast on all side, and then season with garlic powder, onion powder, and minced garlic just prior to adding sauerkraut and juice. Let this mixture come to a boil and then turn heat down to medium and add water just to cover the top of the roast. Add grated potato and mix in with sauerkraut. This helps with the acidity and tartness. Add pepper to taste. Finally cover and let simmer, checking occasionally to prevent sticking, for two to three hours until meat is cooked all the way through. Remove roast from sauerkraut and serve both with your favorite sides such as mashed potatoes and green
